The best events in Amsterdam during December

December has just started and that means holiday season is starting soon too. If you still have some time left after all the holiday shoppings, spending time with your family-in-law and eating more than you actually could on Christmas, you might want to have a look at the best events of this month in Amsterdam. Most of them include some holiday activity anyway. Like holiday shopping, ice skating or eating. Or all at the same time at one of the many Christmas markets in the city!

1. Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt.

At the Westergas in Westerpark you will find of the best Christmas markets of this year (yes it's that time of the year again). Buy holiday presents for your loves ones, have a hot chocolate milk and get ready for the holiday season. If that's not enough you can go for a beer at Troost brewery, watch a movie at Cineville or go for a pre-christmas dinner at Pacific. And there's a special program for the kids, too. Enough choice!

Where: Westergas
When: 20 until 23 December 2019

2. Ice Village Amsterdam.

Every year in front of Rijksmuseum, Ice Village will turn Museumplein into a winter wonderland. Go ice skating under a replica of the Skinny Bridge, go strolling over the Christmas market or enjoy a warm drink and snack when you're done shopping. This tiny village has it all to get in the mood for the holiday season!

Where: Museumplein
When: 13 until 26 December 2019

3. Amsterdam Light Festival.

We did write about the Amsterdam Light Festival before, but now it finally has begun! In November, December and January you can get to see some really fine artworks by great international and local artists in Amsterdam East. The artworks have two things in common: 1. they light up and 2. they have something to do with this year's theme 'disruption'.

We have a Amsterdam Light Festival cruise that takes you to all the artworks. Curious? Get your tickets now!

When: 28 November until 19 January

4. Christmas tree at Dam Square.

Go see the famous Christmas tree at Dam Square this year. Coming all the way from the German Ardennes, the tree is more than 20 metres tall! Imagine a tree like that being transported over the road.

With more than 40.000 lights hanging in the tree, it will definitely do well in the background of your photo with friends or family. So have a break in between holiday shopping on the Klaverstraat and take a moment to admire this giant of a Christmas tree!

When: from 14 December on

5. Go ice skating in Amsterdam.

We wrote about this last week, but it's definitely worth to bring it up again. Get your skates ready, find the courage and show what you've got! There's so many places where you can go ice skating this winter in Amsterdam. And if you're lucky enough, there might be a chance it will get cold enough to skating on the canals of Amsterdam. The last time that happened is already a few years ago, so we are all desperately waiting for that to happen again.

When: November until March
